Recently, I've been missing in action on this blog due to work and personal constrains, however, my time in 2 weeks time may be more free. I am about to embark on a new adventure or venture. I am starting an online shop named "MilkBar". It is an ode to slow food made by hand, from scratch, in small batches and with the finest ingredients. Case Study Houses.

Since young I always knew what sort of houses I would like to have if I could build one from scratch. As I have mentioned before, one of my favourite houses is the Farnsworth House at Piano. It is a fine example of mid twentieth century architecture. These case study houses which were sponsored by Arts and Architecture magazine in the late 1940s to early 1960s started as an invitation to major architects to design and build inexpensive and efficient homes during the housing boom after WW2, and the return of millions of soldiers.

Out of the 35 designs, only 24 were built and out of that 24, 2 were demolished and another 2 were remodeled. What a pity. The most photographed and iconic one must be Case Study #22, Stahl House by Pierre Koenig. It is at West Hollywood and is a cantilever house over a cliff. However, my favourites are Case Study #9, Entenza House by Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen (which has been remodeled as a guest house or annex to a bigger house) and Case Study # 21B also by Pierre Koenig.

I love pearls and that's not a secret. When I first laid eyes on Thakoon's collection for Japanese jeweller, Tasaki, it was love at first sight. I love how simple the pieces are yet they bring upon a little funk to a classic "string of pearls". My favourite piece is the necklace.

Emeco 111 Navy Chair.

Emeco's original 1006 Navy Chair is so iconic and not forgetting eco-friendly. It is made of 80% recycled aluminum. The new 111 Navy Chair follows in its "daddy's" footsteps being made from 111 recycled plastic Coca Cola Pet bottles to form 1 chair. The price is around half the price of the aluminum one and it comes in an array of colours. My favourite has got to be the red as well as persimmon. They make great chairs for an outdoor dining area or even in cafes.

Inspiration for Casual Dining Room.

I've put together some pieces which I would love to have together for a casual dining room. The dining area would also have a corner for folks waiting for dinner to be ready, and also a console table that would also double as a bar or buffet. I have selected vintage chairs for their simplicity and beauty. The Arne Vodders would flank both sides of the length of the table and the Grant Feathersons would be at both ends of the table. Above the Concorde table would be the Nautic Portreath pendant lamp. The reason why I picked the Concorde table was that usually the casual diner would be near the kitchen and it could also double up as an extra prep/pastry table (being marble). The decanter lamps would be hung above the console table.

I think that a casual diner should always fun and different without all the chi chi stuffiness that is usually in a formal dining space. It should be a space that people want to hang out in, sometimes even do work in. Something to think about. Enjoy.

The older I get, the more I learn to appreciate certain smaller things in life like ceramics. I especially love the grey and orange range that James and Tilla Waters has. My favourite has got to be the deep bowl. There is something so simple yet beautiful about their pottery that appeals to the senses. You just want to feel it, smell it, eat from it or even just look at it.

Lanvin for H&M: The First Wave.

The first wave for Lanvin for H&M has swept through North America. On the 18th Nov, there was a fashion show at Pierre Hotel, NY which the dresses were reworked and to be auctioned off to benefit UNICEF. Check out the auction site which also has 5 Alber Elbaz sketches up for grabs. I think that would make great art for any Lanvin fan.

On the 20th Nov, H&M opened its stores to crowds of people queuing to get their hands on the much hyped designs. Check out the video.

Edition Hotels.

You must be kidding if you think that Hotelier and Real Estate Developer, Ian Schrager (co-founder of the legendary Studio 54) could ever sit around and not be busy with yet another ambitious project. In 2006, he reopened the iconic Gramercy Park Hotel, NY to much fanfare and excitement. The hotel with its bohemian charm and distinct character has earned its place in New York as one of the coolest hotels around.

So the man understands what hip is. Maybe he got bored with the whole boutique hotel thing (100 or less number of rooms), so he is reinventing the industry. After all he is the father of boutique hotels and everyone in the industry over the last decade have tried to replicate his success, interpret their own style in the many boutique hotels that have sprung up.

This time, he has teamed up with Marriot to come up with a new hotel brand named, Edition. Its target market are the young, hip who are understated, love art and the finer things in life. No more very trying, pretentiously hip and self-conscious hotels. Their first hotel in Waikiki, The Waikiki Edition (353 rooms) opened its doors on 15th of October 2010. Most of the rooms have terraces, the hotel has also a very famous chef, Morimoto as its resident chef, its own exclusive beach, an outdoor movie theatre and also its own surf and bikini boot camp. It can't get more cool than this.

The next few hotels will open in London (the old Berners Hotel), Istanbul, Barcelona, Bangkok, Mexico City and South Beach, USA. So look out for them.

Lanvin Loves Hennes And Mauritz (H&M)

It's no secret. I love Lanvin. I want to eat in, live in, dream in, marry in and die in Lanvin. Alber Elbaz is a genius. He designed clothes for the today women to be strong yet fragile in. The Lanvin for H&M collection will be for sale at shops around the world on the 23rd of Nov. Apart from the dresses, accessories, there is also a lipstick and fishnets. Personally some of the dresses are a rehash of some of the most iconic pieces that he has done, I have nothing against that (or will I ever against Lanvin) because it is affordable and who says style has to be expensive. Even the rich sometimes can't buy grace or style. Will I be getting any? But of course. With much trouble, I managed to streamline the pieces that I want really badly. Fingers crossed that the buyer manages to get her hands on them and I just might have something Lanvin for Christmas.

The mens collection is also very desirable. I love his tuxedo shirts and suits. My favourite piece from the mens wear is the old-school blazer.

Most Desirable Christmas Gifts 2010.

Every year when it hits November, I can't help but think about Christmas. This year, it is no different. The Christmas wreath is already on the door to welcome visitors as early as the first day of November.

I absolutely love Christmas. It is my favourite holiday of the year. The expression of love through the grand celebration with friends, showering your loved ones with gifts (mine include homemade goods), holidays and the most delectable of food (Turkey, Ham, Roast Beef, Fruitcakes, Candy Canes). This is definitely the season of joy and thanksgiving.

Then you dream of, ever since you were a child (sometimes aloud), what the most ultimate Christmas present would be for that year. Remembering that if you keep it realistic, it just might come true. Of course, the most ultimate gift for me (any year) would be a hotel of my own which I get to design from scratch. A close second would be a piece of land and a house that I get to design. The experience on both counts would be so delightful.

Then there are realistic gifts. Those that someone could easily buy which would charm me and I would definitely love. Take out your wallets, it is time to buy some affection from your special someone.

Bellocq Tea and Accessories. They are to die for, especially for an avid tea drinker. I adore the tea cannister, gold vial (gold dust to sprinkle on desserts or even in the tea), mate guord and bombilla from the accessories line.

Diptyque's Limited Edition Perfume Bottle by FX Balléry. It is a handmade crystal bottle that has it's own unique number. The bottle is sold with a concentrated version of one of diptych's signature scents - either Philosykos or L'Ombre dans l'Eau. It is sold with a black lacquer box, metal funnel and refill. I love the lines on the bottle as though they were the fumes enveloping it. Gorgeous.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Lady in Yellow Gold and Leather Strap. This is a classic. I think it is

simple, has a quiet charm and beautiful. First I must declare, I am not a watch collector. I only own two watches; a 20 year old Tag Heuer F1 rubber strap and a 15 year old Baume and Mercier Rivera. Both given to me by my dad, one to swim with, the other as an everyday watch. I have recently gone round declaring recently that if I were to acquire any watches, there is just room for maybe 3 more in my lifetime. 1 gold watch (at the moment, Patek Philippe Nautilus), maybe the Georg Jensen Vivianna and 1 leather strap watch ( this is it). It is simple, understated and a tat old-school. Very me.

The Agrarian Kitchen Experience as well as the Whole Hog Classes. Agrarian Kitchen is a fantastic experience for any foodie. Besides learning how to cook, you get to wear your gum boots into their farm to pick your fresh produce and eat your "practical" there. They grow their own vegetables as well as farm some "forgotten" animals. Imagine eying a little wessex saddleback piglet and thinking of all the nasty things you would like to do with it. The thought is enough to quicken my juice. Jokes aside. This is an experience of a lifetime for the "green" foodie. Their classes are almost fully booked right through to June 2011. Time to make travel plans to Tasmania and make a pit stop.

Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica Dinner Service. So why would I want porcelain and as you notice the price of the desirable gifts are supposed to get more and more expensive. How expensive can China be? Let's just say a plate could be as cheap as USD300 up to a few thousands for one of the rarer pieces. A quick history lesson.

Flora Danica was commissioned by Crown Prince Frederik on behalf of king Christian VII of Denmark for creation at the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory. According to tradition the service was intended as a gift for the Empress Catherine the Great of Russia, an enthusiastic collector of porcelain.

The king chose to have Danish plants depicted on the porcelain service, thus making it an obvious choice. The 18th century was the age of enlightenment and sensitivity, and Europe's fascination with botany was growing. Porcelain had become a matter of royal prestige since the recipe for this 'white gold' had been rediscovered in Europe in the beginning of the century, and most European princes quickly founded their own porcelain manufactories.

Flora Danica was used for the first time on 29 January 1803. The occasion was nothing less than the birthday banquet for the king himself. Ever since this royal service has been used only on ceremonial occasions, among which were royal birthdays and weddings, visits by- foreign monarchs and banquets held for the opening of the High Court and the investiture of knights.

After the creation of the original service Flora Danica was not produced for a further 60 years. Then, in 1863, a new service was made as a wedding present from the Danish people to Princess Alexandra, daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark, on her marriage to the Prince of Wales, later king Edward VII. Queen Alexandra's Flora Danica service is now kept at Windsor Castle as part of Queen Elizabeth II's collection.

Of the 1,802 pieces of the original Flora Danica service delivered in 1803, 1,530 survive to the present day. Part of this service still graces the royal table of Queen Margrethe II on state occasions at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen. Other pieces from this rare, old dinner service remain safely exhibited at Rosenborg Castle, now a museum, and Amalienborg Palace, the official residence of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.

The pieces are hard to come by and no private collector has ever collected the whole series as yet, with all the different floras, let alone a dinner service for a few people. I only ask for a teapot, tea cup and saucer with it's dessert plate. Happy Hunting.

Francesco Clemente's Artwork. This year, I have collected more art than my many years added together. I absolutely love Francesco Clemente's work. This one here is his portrait of the famous designer Gianfranco Ferre. (This is for sale) I love his watercolour portraits, then again seriously, I would love to own anything from him. No qualms about that. It would make a good piece to add to the collection.

2011 Porsche 911 Turbo S. I always loved the Porsche. It isn't as loud as a Ferrari or Lamborghini but it packs a punch and makes a really good drive. This version has 530bhp, 0-62mph at 3.3s. Top speed of 195mph. It comes exclusively with the 7 speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission which essentially is a double clutch gearbox. This ensures a smooth change of gears. I am a fond believer that if nothing goes quite wrong with the car or if finances permits, to keep it for as long as I can. That's what makes a Porsche so desirable. Its design is so easy to love even many years from now. Just like my Mini.

I know that I have been missing for quite a while and my apologies. This year has been a rollercoaster of a year for me; personal, career as well as in the area of my interest. I am however determined to write this most more consistently like before, starting with an update of my apartment.

As I am living alone now, I decided to put in a few touches in the flat. I think it is always nice to give your home character by adding some items up for display especially when they are meaningful to you not just a mere testimony of your great taste.

I have put up a little display of some possessions from my past under a huge glass dome on top of a few wine crates to double up as extra bookshelf space. I am running out of bookshelf space rapidly due to my magazine collection as well as CDs.

Recently I have also been in a habit of burning a Malin + Goetz Cannabis candle before showering at night, so that the room will be perfumed with it's gorgeous musky, spicy scent. It smells to me how a man should be, mysterious, masculine and inviting. When it isn't in use, it is covered with a glass cloche. It sits on a pretty vintage plate that has been chipped on the edge.

I have also designed a mirror to be my permanent menu board. You can see it in use for a dinner party. It is adjacent to a small grouping of art, photos and a handwritten piece. Frames are from Ikea.

My door knocker for the longest time has been left without a label, so instead of a family name, I cross-stitched a modern greeting. This adds a little fun to the old fashioned knocker. A nice element of surprise.

These were handpainted by Mara of Blue Trike. The butterfly was commissioned by me. The slices of wood are hand picked and cured by her husband. They have such a beautiful detailing on their own. Art does not always have to come from someone famous or be expensive. Art has to speak to the soul of its audience/spectator.

While I was in Bangkok, I couldn't resist visiting Spring and Summer which were these two houses that were converted into cafes. If the weather permits, the lawn is open for guests to laze on.
A good friend had asked me which house was me. Spring was easy to love and a classic example of open areas, clean house but it was Summer with its character that intrigued me. Anytime they decide to wing up the business, I'd like to own it and use Spring as the main house with 2 guest rooms and Summer as my master house. Then I can sit on the porch and look at Spring in the evening to marvel at its beauty.

Sorry for not being able to post new stuff lately. I have been busy a design project of late which I will share more with you as time goes by. I promise it to be very different and special; worth the wait.

Anyway, today I have decided to put together a couple of pieces together as a living room inspiration for those who are thinking of putting together your living room or lounge area. I thought it would be lovely to have an entertainment area where you can just have a nice group of 8 to 10 people to just sit around and chat, while waiting for dinner or even play a little after dinner games. My kind of dinner would end with some form of game like gentlemen versus the ladies in trivia, pictionary, taboo or even trivia. It is such good fun, throws in a little competition and keeps the evening light and engaged.

My kind of lounge at the moment is a tat mismatched, rather than polished, it is nicely collected and fun to look at. The two long sofas facing each other with two marble coffee tables end to end between them, on adjacent to the sofa is the circle chair and next to the quack sofa on the other side is the crate table for the magazines. Above the coffee table are a collection of different cage lamps with different bulbs. Leaning up against a wall on the far side of the room opposite the circle chair is the side board.

Alexander Wang's Pre-Fall 2010 collection speaks to me for some strange reason. Recently I have been really into the whole tuxedo look, especially after acquiring a deconstructed Lanvin Tuxedo silk dress. I love the tuxedo look because it is formal yet playful for a girl at the same time. That's why the Alexander Wang collection appeals to me. The fun of being a female is the ability to really dress up, make believe compared to being a guy, and we should take advantage of that privilege.

I am a fan. I love Mulberry as a brand and with Mulberry Home, it's no exception. I love the old school simplicity of their fabrics and the somewhat familiar feeling it gives. I don't think a whole room in plaid is the way to go but think of a little splash of it in a room in the form of a chair or even cushions in muted damask prints. It could bring into the room a little cosiness and yet a different touch without anyone thinking your granny had a hand in your decor.

Since the last time I reviewed Vers Audio, they have expanded their range for ipod/ipad/iphone casings, and a radio, clock, alarm and ipod player rolled into one. I love the green message that they are advocating and also the clean wood look. I own the Vers 2x myself and I strongly vouch for it's build quality and sound.

A couple of years ago when the traveling case for Veuve Clicquot first came out, I went out hunting for it. It was so adorable and comes with two champagne glasses. Then in the same year (2006), Marc Newson did a lime green champagne cooler for for Dom Pérignon.

This year, Marc Newson has repeated the success of their collaboration with a traveling case. The case is made of a high-tech composite that keeps a chilled bottle of bubbly perfectly cool during traveling, while resisting wear and tear. Priced at €200, there are only 1000 pieces made. I hear you can get it from the website itself or Harvey Nichols. Personally I love it for three reasons; I am a design freak, I enjoy my Champagne very much and I love green. This is to die for.

First things first, I will say that this is morbid and crazy. However, the thought behind this is meaningful. Would I buy this lamp, no. Watching the youtube video of the lady powering up the lamp is gross enough.

Read this quote about the lamp's philosophy and see if you'll join that camp.

"Scenario designer, and seemingly a junior sociologist, Mike Thompson has documented an environmental and social experiment to measure the value of generated power. The idea behind Mike’s creation is to bring some added value and realization to an individual in terms of wasted energy. He states that the average American consumes about 3383kwh of energy per year. That is equal to leaving a light on in four rooms for a full year. It is the luxury and ignorance of being able to flick a switch and “produce” light that makes us ultimately waste energy. In doing this we do not give a single thought to how this is effecting the environment, nor do we consider the method(s) it may take to give us this light. To put a bit more emphasis and realization on the entire process Mike has created the Blood Lamp. Design house Form Us With Love designed these lamps for Design Stockholm House last year. I love them. They remind me of those work lamps in mines, boats, or construction sites but luxed. My favourite one has got to be the gold cage one. The lamps come with a switch on the lamp holder and on the 10 feet long wire, there is a dimmer. It can be modified into a pendant lamp. I bought the last piece just today from Style Nordic while it was on sale. It has become my new bedside lamp. Will take some photos soon and share it with you.

Nina Ricci has such a good sense of humour when it comes to shoes. Their spring/summer 2010 shoes made good evidence of that (images 2 - 4). They have a touch of vintage and new all rolled into one. They also had a collection of very queer shoes a season ago. When i first saw it, I thought it looked more like sculpture or something you'd put on display rather than wear. You wonder how easy is it for the normal non-model folks to wear them? Judging from one of the most famous fashion patron, Daphne Guinness (in the first photo) not easy at all. Kudos to her for making it out of home.

Quite a few years back, I lived less than a block from this block of flats. I was at 240 Little Collins St and this was just up the road. I went to the auction of the mirror unit of this flat then and a friend's bf (now, husband) won the auction at 340k. Looks like he would make a killing if he decided to sell it now, this unit was sold at 710k. I love the high ceilings, art deco building, french windows, balcony, location and its layout. The building is called Shocko House and it was built in 1920. I miss living in a vintage building. They have so much character and charm. I'm really tempted to buy a small unit in one of them for investment. It's terribly alluring.

Poaa Dumbbells by Philippe Starck.

I know these were designed in 1999 and not exactly the most recent but the Poaa Dumbbells by Philippe Starck is almost like a sculpture. The gold ones are (each) 2kg dumbbells and the gun silver ones are 3kg each. It was designed for London's Sanderson Hotel, and part of a project led by Starck for the hotelier Ian Schrager, from Studio 54 fame. After toning your arms, you can leave it on the table as a paper weight or even on display in a shelf. It definitely looks better than the usual plastic dumbbells which should be kept hidden from view when not in use.

From the first time I set my eyes on a Henry Built ad in Dwell magazine, I was mesmerized. The attention to detail, how well thought the kitchen was, the simplicity of the entire design caught me by surprise. I remember staring at the page studying their choice of materials, proportion of their pieces and colours. Without a doubt, I had set my eyes not on a luxury kitchen like a Poliform Varenna but on something that I knew I could actually have and use. That's why I am also happy to share with you this newfound interest.

Tea Together.

The best jam I have ever tasted is from them. I had a taste of No. 16. I loved every bit of it. Soft, silky apricot with a hint of lavender. It was all I could think of for the next few days. Tea Together has done an excellent job. It changes my perception of jam, something we take for granted on some mornings. It's a pity that we don't get them here much except in St Regis and Capella.

Pure and simple-our first marmalade.

Cooked with a fistful of cardamom pods – pop them open and crunch the grains or recycle in a ragout or milk pudding.

A funky, dark, sensuous late summer jam, stuffed with violet figs from Provence and with a generous dash of sailors' Rum.

A jam of Autumn, even though we offer it all year round. As evocative as woodsmoke and hedgerows, the elderberry wraps a wildwood vibe around the core flavour while the heat of ginger gives a hike to the otherwise rather soft flavour.

Whole apricots in the final jam are framed by the almond-bitterness of the kernels that we break open and peel by hand, and by sprigs of summer lavender whose grey-green leaves decorate the bright, soft orange of the fruit.

Ingredients: whole lemons, unbleached cane sugar, Earl Grey tea.

The essence of Summer in a jar, we use the natural setting qualities of the currants to support our damask rose petals. The result is a jam of glistening scarlet with the full-on fragrance of summer roses. Crunch the petals between your teeth for extra sensation.

I love the textiles from Third Drawer Down. They focus on collaborations with artists budding and seasoned. They have a collection of duvet covers, baby bibs, tea towels, handkerchieves and purses. Some of them even look good enough to be framed up (this is cheaper than buying their art from a gallery).

This is a break-up letter printed on a handkerchief. How thoughtful.

Hotel La Mamounia, Marrakech, Morocco.

Hotel La Mamounia is one of the most beautiful grand hotels left. Built in 1920, recently it went through a 3 year long beauty slumber (reopening late last year). USD 176m was spent on the renovation to update the hotel. Judging from these photos, the 3 year long wait has definitely paid off. It is stunning. The restaurant with tables in a courtyard has such a mysterious yet grand vibe about it. I love the swimming pool too. The hotel has been a national treasure since its opening and has attracted many celebrities over the years and now with its update, it just might have cemented its position in Marrakech as the hotel to lodge in.

Georg Jensen Damask.

I never knew that Georg Jensen had linens until not too recently. That made me very insistent that I should visit their shop (which was in the same building as me, so no excuses there). Georg Jensen Damask has a good collection of table cloths (runners, napkins and place mats included), bed linens, towels, bath robes, rugs and kitchen linens (tea towels and aprons). Their table cloths can be custom made, which is really good if you have an odd dining table like a huge square or a very long one. They have a design by Arne Jacobsen which is my favourite (partly because I am a huge fan). It's the design in the second picture.

It's a pity that I couldn't find much pictures of their linens online but do visit their website to see their entire collection.

Henry Watson Range.

I hear that the Henry Watson garlic cellar is excellent. Apparently the right way to keep your cloves is in a cool and dark space, so the folks from Henry Watson came up with this garlic cellar. I like the bread crock and the tea canister as well. They exude an old world charm that would have your friends asking about them.

The Ugly Duckling is a fantastic e-store with a good amount of gems. I could see myself happily buying up quite a bit of their stock. There is a good mix of old and new which is great for folks like me who love their vintage teacups over new ones, but might have a modern looking kettle. There are so many great stuff in store that when it came down to deciding which to showcase, I couldn't. So here we go, all of my choices. I hope that you enjoy the shop as much as I did.

Recently, I've been doing a little sprucing each weekend. I've always thought of home as a constant work in progress. This always keeps you busy and the pride you'll get from doing your own place is priceless. Moreover, it gives your visitors something new to see every time they come by.

A new nook with some books, photos, an anglepoise 75 lamp and ceramics.

This is still in progress. I intend to add a custom made mirror hung above it to double up as the menu for guests when entertaining.

Mondrain Hotel is owned by Morgans Hotel Group which was founded by Ian Schrager of Studio 54 fame. So you should expect nothing less than glitzy and spectacular. This is no exception. The maestro behind this is no other than Marcel Wanders. All that name dropping, this hotel must be excellent and it is. They have pulled out all the stops in this hotel, from the grand lobby with its dramatic pillars and staircase to the chandeliers hidden under huge bells, all the attention to detail is meticulous in the most dramatic manner.

However, having said all that, I do love the fact that when you step into this hotel, you feel as though you were transported into a different world, a world that dares to dream big; a world that is bold and beautiful, almost in its own fantasy.

I absolutely love this photograph owned by Reuters of thick black smoke rising above Eyjafjallajokull against the beautiful natural phenomenon known as the Northern Lights. These green auroras are caused by the emissions of photons in the Earth's upper atmosphere, above 80 km (50 miles), from ionized nitrogen atoms regaining an electron, and oxygen and nitrogen atoms returning from an excited state to ground state. They are ionized or excited by the collision of solar wind particles being funneled down and accelerated along the Earth's magnetic field lines; excitation energy is lost by the emission of a photon of light, or by collision with another atom or molecule.

I've been thinking of art lately. It's one of the things that my apartment is lacking. I'm in no hurry at all to acquire pieces because I feel that what I get must reflect how I feel then and it should be a treat not something bought on impulse.

Gamma Issa House in São Paulo, Brazil.

This is my all time favourite house. Why? My dream house would look really private and small from the road leading up to it, opening its space out into the outdoors. It would be like a box and have one of its side glassed and be able to open entirely. It would look simple and understated. Isn't the Gamma Issa House all that already? A big plus point is that it resembles the Farnsworth House but with a lot more space.

It is designed by architect Marcio Kogan in collaboration with a few artists. Gama Issa is a modern sustainable house which despite the concrete block which forms the house has a transparency between the garden, the parallelogram pool that runs along the house, and the interior of the house. The transparency of the house is achievable through the large sliding glass panels which serve as a wall and have magnificent views of the garden and the pool. Natural day light and ventilation are available throughout the entire house.

Marcio Kogan wrote an article about the inspiration of the house:

Cdesign is by Carr Design Group for Omvivo. Carr Design Group is a multi skilled firm of architects and Interior Designers. Long recognised for a contemporary aesthetic and sharp focus on detail, today Carr is one of the most respected design firms in Australia. Director of Carr Design Group, Sue Carr approached Omvivo with a specific design intent for bathroom products to be used in her own home, and with the vision of a collection for future projects. Omvivo loved how modern and timeless they looked that they decided to sell them as part of their collection.

I like the clean lines and it's attention to details. The concealed storage under it is also a smart welcome compared to open shelves.

Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Barcelona.

Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Barcelona is gorgeous, and I mean drop dead gorgeous. I saw pictures of it and I was bowled over. While its location on Passeig de Gràcia is unbeatable, it is the work of Spanish-born architect, Patricia Urquiola (who did the interior design of the Mandarin Oriental Barcelona) that gave the hotel it's unique look and feel. To me, it's the definition of sheer perfection. It has a rooftop bar and swimming pool that overlooks the city. Guest rooms that are simple, easy yet well detailed. I'm in love.

Acne/Lanvin 2010.

It was because of last year's Acne/Lanvin collaboration that I started to sit up and notice Acne. Now both brands have become my absolute favourites. One of my favourite Acne pieces come from their pop classic range, the copy shirt. I love it. It's so easy to wear and comfortable.

This year, the pieces that Lanvin has come up with for Acne brings to mind two different looks, studded and drapery. I love the first denim dress especially. Immaculate cutting and lovely drapery. And who says that you can't be dressy in denim?

I know many of you might look at this and think this is just any old tray with a lot of compartments and wonder what so great about it. This is a vintage printer typeset tray. Why am I blogging about it? I want to throw an idea at you.

If you are thinking of redoing your wardrobe area and maybe add in a chest of drawers, Why not put this on top? If you want to, add a nice glass door with a pretty frame on the top hinged. Ladies, put your pretty necklaces, brooches, rings, etc in it or for the guys, your cuff links, tie pins, or collar pins on display. It can really look beautiful and unique. Have a think about it. Change the way you look at old unwanted items.

Some of their designs remind me of Florence Broadhurst or what she would have done if she were still alive. This is an art installation by Sam Spenser a few years back. I thought it looked beautiful. Notice the colour of the umbrellas? They are the same shade as the signature shade of yellow from the champagne house, Veuve Clicquot. A Nook in a Hallway.

If I had a lovely hallway, without a doubt, I would put in a little nook where I can hide to read, and have small intimate conversations. The question would be, how would my nook look? I have put together a few pieces of furniture that would look great together. The walls would be in chalk, the floors would be in either herringbone style oak parquet or concrete floor. There will be no art on the wall, except on the shelves, small pieces of art and a radio. Very clean walls and ceiling would be the key. If ceiling lights are needed, then just downlights.

From the understated entrance to the elegant lounge and dining rooms, the public areas reflect the hotel's intention; to charm as well as to welcome. I love their use of rich colours and prints in the rooms which is such a nice change from the standard contemporary hotels with their block shades of black, grey and cream.

First I would like to apologise for the tiny images. I couldn't get hold of any so I had to copy the thumbnails. Now that we have that out of the way, I must declare that I am biased towards Liberty of London. I love their old school prints and I love their collaboration collection with Merci even more.

Merci is a French store that sells fashion, home decor, has a cafe and a restaurant. It opened its doors in March 2009 and has been hyped as the new place to shop at. The owners of Merci are also the founders of children wear brand, Bonpoint which they sold off.

Anyway, these are the pieces that have caught my eye. I especially love the envelope, suitcase and baby bib. Enjoy.

The Schaffer Residence.

Yes, it's no surprise that I was gushing about the house that Colin Firth's in "A Single Man". Colin Firth may be the very attractive brooding man with a few very cute love interests, but it's his house that I was absolutely in love with. So much so that I googled it once I got home.

Guess what? The Schaffer Residence, which is at the foot of Verdugo Mountains is up for sale at USD$1.495 million. It has recently been painstakingly restored and is ready to be the pride and joy of an architecture enthusiast (like me). It was designed by John Lautner in 1949. Lautner was one of Frank Lloyd Wright's apprentice for six years and later he went on to be one of the most recognised American architect.

The Schaffer Residence has open plan living, dining and den areas. This redwood, glass and steel structure houses two bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms. I simply love it. Although it is modern, it refrains from being cold and proud. Instead it has so much character; it is cosy, warm, honest, intelligent, mysterious, yet intriguing. Doesn't that already sound like a man you would date and keep?

Ever since I was a kid, I loved Cacharel. My dad would buy me Cacharel kid's clothes and I swear by them. They are the most beautiful. I love their prints and fun style. Now as an adult, I still do adore their looks, more so their recent years than before. The Spring /Summer collection that is in stores are really rather dreamy and have a great silhouette. Marble Hexagon Mosaic Tiles.

These are lovely. Imagine your kitchen will all white carrara marble hexagon tiles. It would be so luxurious and slightly vintage. Must remember that this is not advisable for a wet kitchen though. As marble is notorious for staining, I would recommend this for a dry, show kitchen that would not require washing of the floor, just light mopping. Remember that these would also have grout in between them, so moulding might occur. However, if you don't mind the flooring not being all white, I would recommend a grey grouting. It would make the tiles stand out and you wouldn't have to worry so much about the white grout turning grey. Despite all that, I still think that they look absolutely beautiful (if up kept well.) Remember this is not for those who aren't into housekeeping.

Personally, the hardest part of furnishing a house is finding the small curios. You'll never find them from day one but it's an ongoing effort taken to add new things to your collection. Colonial Soldier is a great resource for little bits of this and that for a boy's or gentleman's room. They sell old union jacks which are great for framing up to hang above beds, old soda stream bottles, antler lamps, a screen made up of matchboxes, and the list goes on. They even sell wooden toy soldiers. My favourite bits and pieces are the old bus stop sign and the radio.

If one had to describe Hillside Su, the words crisp white and myriad of colours would definitely pop up. The hotel is white washed but bathed with colours. There are mirror balls in the lobby to reflect its fun persona. Then it all changes the minute you step in your room. It is calm. I love the beautifully generous swimming pool with the deck chairs. Definitely somewhere I'd laze all day till the sun sets.

I love these hand blown coloured glass pendant lamps by Niche Modern. They started by making glassware for themselves and before they knew it, people were asking them to be made and they were in business. I love the use of tube bulbs instead of the ordinary ones.

I would never call myself a green activist because truth be told, technology and caring for the environment do not make the best company. David Owen, an author advocates living smaller, living closer and driving less are the keys to sustainability. For the last three decades at least, the world's take on lifestyle has changed drastically. No more are we fond believers going local, we have gone regional and global. As much as I love traveling and I believe that it has an outstanding impact on culture and the economy, but air travel is definitely not good for the environment. One of the biggest joke about being green is Paul McCartney's Lexus Hybrid LS600H which was flown in from Japan instead of being shipped. If they had shipped it, the carbon footprint would have been 100 times smaller. Who cares anymore if the car is energy efficient? It would have to write off these losses before even being able to be green. Then the truth of any nature would be that as long as parts of the car had to be imported rather than locally produced, the car in itself would also be not as green as it should be.

I've been pondering about the green thing for quite a while now. I know that globalisation makes production cost lower. I think it also increases carbon footprint, and it also puts the local skilled workers out of a job. It's a tough call which is more important to an organisation. I would naturally think that profit margins are what gives people a bigger pay or bonus. It increases their spending expenditure and in that oxymoronic kind of way, stimulates the economy. However, we are also very slowly killing ourselves. Is there really a balance in life? If life were a balance sheet or we were doing the T bar accounting of our lives, we will realise that there is no such thing as an "all gain" sort of scenario. So many things we gain in terms of quantity, we have already made our losses in terms of quality. So maybe the good, cheap and fast/efficient triangle does stand. You can have something good and cheap but not fast/efficient, or fast/efficient and cheap but not good but what is good and fast/efficient is definitely not cheap. Question is whether are we able to live without some things we now consider a luxury or necessity (like air-conditioning) and take a few steps backwards to save the environment? Earth day is coming up. I reckon that instead of just turning off your lights for an hour, why not turn off your air-conditioning for the night? And please do not light a candle during the blackout. It pollutes our environment as well.

Thonet 214K Chairs.

This is one of the most iconic chairs that is so easily recognised. It is known by so many names; the Vienna, "consumer chair", "coffee shop chair", "chair of chairs" or just plainly No. 14. From 1859 to 1930, up to 50 million of these chairs were reproduced. Last year, a new twist was added. They have decided to knot (that's what the K stands for) one of the legs. I think it would be fun to have a couple of pieces of the classic pieces and have one or two of the knotted pieces mixed among them. Then your guest might just discover the knot in their chair and have something to rave and rant about or feel special.

By the way, there is also a kid's version of the classic piece. Adorable.

Amangiri must be what dreams are made of. Imagine being the guest that is taking in the beauty of the room with a huge window looking out to a harsh but captivating landscape. It definitely has a sense of peace and purity to it. I love the Bauhaus inspired architecture. It is so simple in form but it retains its mystery. There are 34 suites and I hear that 28 villas will be built which can be bought as private residences or an escape from the maddening shroud, we call the city.

Recently, while hanging out with my best friend, I realised that one of her neighbours has erected a treehouse. It was beautiful. It reminds me of times when I was a kid and I sat in the tree wondering how fantastic it would be if it had a house. Anyway, I have compiled a few treehouses that I think are beautiful. Beater Blade.

Recently, I came across a really smart invention by Beater Blade. It's a mixer attachment for a Kitchenaid or Kenwood mixer. It actually scrapes the side of the bowl as it mixes. I would usually manually spatula the sides of the bowl to mix the mixture well in between additions. This would really cut down the mixing time. Maybe those with a Kitchenaid like me would know that around the dimple, it never gets mixed well, this mixer attachment promises to even get those "hard to reach" areas. So for those who are avid bakers like me, I would highly recommend this.

Viceroy Resort Snowmass must be one of the few eco friendly snow resorts. During construction, all dirt removed from the construction site was saved and reused. Construction workers were transported to the site by bus, reducing fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. I love the modern rooms and the contemporary public areas which look so cosy especially after a hard day of skiing or snowboarding. The cabanas by the pool are so inviting, makes you want to doze off in them or spend some romantic time with someone special in them.

This must be the most beautiful and handy espresso machine ever designed. It's compact, making it easy to bring with you where ever you go. It is battery operated and the size of a thermos. All you need to do is to add water, one of their espresso packs, press a button and voila, freshly brewed coffee.

Check out the matching milk frother. They claim to create thick luscious froth even with low fat milk.

The Colonnade, Singapore.

I know I've said before that quite a lot of the architecture in Singapore is rather unimaginative, the space planning in the building bad, not energy efficient and owner maintenance a challenge. Despite all these, I will also say that I have always had a favourite development in Singapore since I was a little girl. My favourite piece of residential architecture without a doubt is The Colonnade on Grange Road. I remembered when I had the opportunity to visit a church friend who lived in there, it only cemented my love for the beautiful building. Every unit is two storey high, with a lovely open plan living and dining area, balcony, big kitchen, a guest room on the first floor with a view from the tub in the ensuite. There were two other bedrooms on the second floor. It was love and even though I've seen the unit just thrice, it is forever etched in my memory. By the way, the units in this development are wholly owned by Pontiac Land and are only for rent.

It is designed by renowned late architect, Paul Rudolph who was well known for his cubist building design. Although this building was built in the 1980s, the design is still so fresh and modern. It looks like boxes being randomly stacked on one another.

"Conceived as a set of prefabricated units hoisted onto a structural frame, the Colonnade apartment tower is another attempt by Rudolph to design with prefab units, what he called the 'twentieth-century brick.' The original concept for this kind of structure dates back to the 1960s and particularly to his 1967 design for a Graphic Arts Center in lower Manhattan, which established the fundamental principles for his designs of tall buildings in the subsequent three decades.
Although for technical and financial reasons the Colonnade was built of pour-in-place concrete with conventional techniques rather than with prefabricated units, the final product retains much of the visual impact of the original concept."

I find this terribly fascinating. The thought of being able to add a wine cellar to your home easily and in a stylish manner. Spiral Cellars is a smart way of storing up to 1900 bottles in your home without building another room by sinking into the ground a watertight pre-cast cylindrical system and like any traditional cellar, it relies on the earth for insulation and it requires no additional power for cooling. I absolutely adore the new Lanvin spring collection. I love wearing black because it is one of the easiest colours to wear. With the right cutting and accessories, it can be dressed up or down. It looks good for work as well as play. The spring collection focuses a lot on simple colours with beautiful shapes and volume. Classic and elegant.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. There is this clip that is not in the movie but accompanies it. I think it's adorable. The song is sung by Zooey Deschanel who has her own band, She & Him. The song is entitled, "Why do you let me stay here?" which is very appropriate for this clip as well as the movie. Enjoy.

Andel's Hotel, Lodz, Poland

I love how they have taken an old heritage building, kept the exterior as is and redone the space inside making serve a new purpose. This once used to be a textile factory and now it is the Andel's Hotel. Ovals have been cut into the ceilings of the different floors changing colours in hues of blue to give the hotel a different feel. To be honest, that must be my favourite feature of the hotel.

Crosby Street Hotel, New York.

Last Christmas, I received a book on "New New York Interiors" and it is beautiful. It captured the spirit of New York contemporary design. If it had a personality, it would be: a modern well travelled soul with a love for the collecting bits and pieces, who isn't afraid to mix a few pieces of vintage and loves vibrant splashes of colours.

The Crosby Street Hotel embodies just that. It is owned by Firmdale Hotels privately owned by husband and wife team, Tim and Kit Kemp. Kit Kemp personally designed the hotel, which was built from ground on a site of an old parking lot. The hotel has a quirky edge with a good mix of solids and prints. Each of the 86 rooms are individually designed and there is also a private screening room with orange Poltrona Frau chairs. To top it all off, British perfumer, Lyn Harris has designed a bespoke fragrance which is featured in all it's toiletries. The scent can also be brought into your home in the form of a scented candle which can be purchased from the hotel.

David Bromley is an Australian artist whose paintings are among those rated as highly collectible in Australia. I love how he captures the feminine form, mystery and innocence in his work. His use of colours give the art appreciator a sense of a familiarity and a vintage almost 60s, 70s feel.

It's no secret that I am a fan of boutique hotels, although the term boutique hotels now is rather loose. It used to be used for hotels which had anything from 3 - 50 rooms, then it was used to label hotels that had under 100 rooms. Now it is for a small hotel that does not belong to a big hotel chain that provides personalised services.

The Upper House is the sister hotel of The Opposite House in Beijing. The Opposite House has already earned its status as legendary. With that, The Upper House has a lot to live up to. However, with the help of Cambridge trained architect, Andre Fu. Andre Fu is the most sought after boutique design guru in Hong Kong. He graduated from Cambridge in 2000 and in that same year, he set up AFSO. He is the protege of renown architect, John Pawson.

I love how clean the design of the hotel is. The selection of cream, oak and greys through out the hotel, exudes a certain elegant, yet easy charm. Located in the heart of Hong Kong, on the upper floors of Pacific Place, the 117 room hotel boasts beautiful views of Victoria Harbour and the Peak. The rooms are known to be the largest in Hong Kong with bathrooms with sizes of 300 sq ft and featuring walk-in rain showers. The two kinds of wood chosen for the hotel; creme oak and bamboo were chosen because they are environmentally friendly. The paints used are also environmentally friendly. This is a fine example of being environmentally friendly does not mean that you need to compromise on design.
